Organic renewal season

Get ready for yourorganic certification renewal

Most certified organic operations renew between January and April. Check your certificate or renewal notice for your exact date, use the checklist below to get ready, and claim your cost share before the deadline.

Before the deadline

Organic renewal checklist

Five habits that make renewal a review instead of a scramble, from the people who see renewal from both sides: certifiers and farmers.

Start your renewal today!
  1. 1

Start early. Smooth renewals usually start weeks before the deadline, right after the season wraps up.

  2. 2

Review your OSP. Note what changed this year: new fields, new inputs, new products, new suppliers.

  3. 3

Gather supporting documents. Seed and input receipts, harvest and sales records, supplier certificates and labels.

  4. 4

Close out last year's findings. Be ready to show how any noncompliances from your last inspection were corrected.

  5. 5

Ask questions now. A mid-season call to your certifier is easier than a scramble in renewal week.

USDA cost share

Get up to 75% of your certification costs back

The USDA Farm Service Agency’s Organic Certification Cost Share Program (OCCSP) reimburses certified operations for part of what they pay for certification. Applications for the 2025 and 2026 program years are due December 31, 2026.

Each scope is reimbursed separately: crops, wild crops, livestock, and processing/handling. State organic program fees are eligible too, so a crop and livestock operation can claim for both scopes.

Apply through your local FSA county office, or through your state agency if it runs the program. You can’t be paid for the same scope through both.
